UNICEF wants you to mine cryptocurrency for charity

UNICEF has launched a page that lets you donate to its Australian branch without giving any money at all. All you need to do is give away part of your computing power to let it mine cryptocurrency.

Over 2,600 people have already donated through what UNICEF calls The Hopepage. Users are able to set what percentage of processing power they’re willing to give the website out of a max of 80 percent. (Be careful not to set the percentage too high.) The longer they stay on the site, the more cryptocurrency they’re helping to mine on UNICEF’s behalf. The site says the cryptocurrency will go toward giving children life-saving supplies “like safe water, therapeutic food, and vaccines.”

Once you click Start Donating, a pop-up in the browser...

WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum is leaving Facebook after clashing over data privacy

WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum is leaving the company amid arguments with parent company Facebook over data privacy and the app’s business model, according to a report from The Washington Post. Koum, together with his fellow co-founder Brian Acton, sold WhatsApp to Facebook in 2014 for an eye-popping sum of $19 billion, $3 billion of which consisted of Facebook stock granted to both Koum and Acton, who left the company back in September. Koum confirmed his departure in a personal Facebook post today.

Koum’s Facebook post does not mention any inner turmoil at WhatsApp or address any of The Washington Post’s reporting, which suggests Koum took issue with Facebook’s approach to data privacy and encryption:

Logan Paul is ending his daily vlogs

Logan Paul announced in a 16-minute vlog over the weekend that he is ending regular updates on his popular daily vlogging channel, which launched less than two years ago and currently has over 17 million subscribers.

According to the video, Paul is abandoning the daily model because he “wants to exercise his creativity in different ways... If anyone is going to end my career, okay, it’s going to be me,” he added. T-Mobile says it has seven major competitors, which is complete nonsense

One of the big issues T-Mobile will have to fight back against if it wants to successfully merge with Sprint is market consolidation. If the two companies merge, the US will go from four major wireless service providers to three, therefore reducing competition. Given how aggressive (and successful) T-Mobile has been over the last several years — ever since its proposed merger with AT&T failed — you can see why this might be an issue.

But if you ask T-Mobile, that isn’t what’s happening at all. In its merger announcement, T-Mobile directly addresses the competition issue by arguing that, in fact, there are currently “at least seven or eight big competitors” in its industry. Sorry, what?

Conventional wisdom, as well as facts and history,...

The central idea is to use trained actors who perform live while viewers interact with them from the comfort of their homes, with everyone using Oculus Rift headsets to enter into and experience the shared world. What a combined T-Mobile and Sprint would look like

After two earlier attempts failed to materialize, T-Mobile and Sprint announced on Sunday that they’ve reached a $26.5 billion merger agreement. If approved, it would combine the third and fourth largest carriers in the United States. The new business would instantly become a much more formidable rival to Verizon and AT&T. Both companies claim that a successful merger would make the United States a leader in the formative early years of 5G mobile networks. But there are very legitimate concerns that shrinking the field of wireless competitors could end up hurting consumers and raising prices.

The deal must be cleared by regulators, including both the Federal Communications Commission and Justice Department, which is no small hurdle. FCC...

Chinese authorities admit they’re able to retrieve deleted WeChat messages

Chinese authorities are able to retrieve deleted WeChat messages from a suspect’s phone to catch criminals, a government watchdog admitted on Monday in social media posts spotted by South China Morning Post. The stunning admission confirms what many have believed for years: WeChat can be used as a government surveillance tool, and even once-deleted messages can be retrieved by authorities.

WeChat’s parent company Tencent denied any wrongdoing, saying in a social media post, “WeChat does not store any chat histories — they are only stored on users’ phones and computers.” That stance is similar to one Tencent has taken in the past, when Chinese auto industry executive Li Shufu stated that the company’s CEO “must be watching all our...

First person convicted under Malaysia’s fake news law gets month in jail

The first person has been charged and found guilty under Malaysia’s Anti-Fake News Act, less than a month after it was passed into law, as reported by Gizmodo.

Salah Salem Saleh Sulaiman, 46, posted a YouTube video claiming Malaysian police took 50 minutes to respond to emergency calls in Kuala Lumpur after the shooting of Palestinian lecturer and Hamas member Fadi al-Batsh on April 21st. Malaysia’s inspector general of police, Mohamad Fuzi Harun, says the response time was eight minutes.

The charge against Sulaiman stated he “with ill intent, published fake news through a video on YouTube.” At the hearing, he pleaded guilty and apologized, stating he posted the YouTube video in a “moment of anger.” “I agreed I made a mistake,” he said....

Twitter is giving more prominence to links tweeted by your network, and it’s starting to group tweets that mention a link together on your timeline. The feature has come to iOS and Android devices as well as Twitter’s web platform, the company confirmed to BuzzFeed.

The move comes as part of Twitter’s shift in focus to surface more news through your timeline and Moments. Twitter started getting listed under the news category in the App Store in 2016 instead of the social networking category. It has started airing live news shows in the home timeline, and it often compiles viral tweets together into stories through its Moments tool.

Etsy, Tumblr, and thousands of other sites will go on ‘red alert’ ahead of a vote to reinstate net neutrality

Etsy, Tumblr, Postmates, and Foursquare will be among thousands of other websites expected to post “red alerts” on May 9th ahead of a vote to block the FCC’s repeal of net neutrality rules. The “go red” campaign is being run by BattleForTheNet.com, and it’s designed to promote awareness about the vote and plaster websites in alerts highlighting the Senate vote. The hope is that this will spur constituents to flood lawmakers with phone calls and emails calling for the restoration of open internet protections.

The Federal Communications Commission approved a measure to remove the net neutrality rules last December in a 3-2 vote. The Congressional Review Act (CRA) allows Congress to strike down new rules with a majority vote, and in this...

Amazon still sells counterfeit goods despite efforts to clean up

Amazon still sells plenty of counterfeit goods even though it’s tried to crack down on fake sellers for years, according to The Guardian. By ordering goods that were listed as legitimate on Amazon, the report uncovered a number of fake items sold by third-party sellers, including a pair of knockoff AirPods that were supposed to be from Apple, used iPhone chargers that were sold as new, counterfeit Kylie Jenner lip gloss, and a fake Supreme x Louis Vuitton iPhone case.

In some cases, Amazon even helped ship counterfeit goods directly to customers, through the Fulfilled by Amazon service. The fake AirPods, for example, were shipped to Amazon and sold with Amazon Prime delivery and drivers. The imitation goods were sold through Amazon’s...

Emoji is the latest book from the Standards Manual design duo

Jesse Reed and Hamish Smyth, the design duo behind the republished MTA, NASA, and EPA standards manuals, are back with a new book: Emoji, a collection of the original 176 emoji characters.

The original emoji were designed by Shigetaka Kurita for Japanese telecommunications company DoCoMo in 1999 to use on pages in Japan. Those small, pixelated 12-by-12 grid images only bear a passing resemblance to today’s far more detailed emoji, but there’s a clear line that can be drawn between Kurita’s early work and the thousands of emoji characters on our phones. Kurita has been involved in the project; Reed and Smyth flew out to Tokyo to interview him for additional context on the original designs, and he’ll also be contributing an introduction...

Windows 10 April 2018 Update: the 10 best new features

Elsewhere there’s easy sharing, quick Bluetooth pairing, a dictation feature, and the ability to mute tabs in Microsoft Edge. Microsoft is also continuing to tweak and improve the Fluent Design system it introduced with the Fall Creators Update. TCL’s new budget-friendly 6-Series 4K HDR TVs start from $650

If you’re looking for a 4K TV on the cheap, TCL has been a good bet for a few years. The company’s P-Series had some of the best budget sets for 2017, and for 2018, TCL is updating this range with a new line that it’s calling the 6-Series. These were first announced earlier this year, and now we know the prices: the 55-inch model is $649.99 (model 55R617), while the 65-inch model (model 65R617) is $999.99. If they’re as good as their predecessors, these will be some very desirable TVs.

The 6-Series sets feature Dolby Vision HDR and contrast control zones, which optimize the contrast of the image (in up to 120 different zones in the 65-inch and 96 zones in the 55-inch). As with last year’s P-Series, these 6-Series sets also come with...

Wildlife photographer of the year disqualified for using a stuffed animal

The disqualified photo.

Judges of the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year have disqualified a winning contestant after the anteater in his prize-winning photograph was judged “highly likely” to be a taxidermy specimen. Called “The Night Rider,” the image was taken by photographer Marcio Cabral and depicts an anteater underneath starry skies next to a hill dotted with glowing bioluminescence. A team of five scientists all judged the work to be a fake, a conclusion Cabral strongly denies.

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition is run by the Natural History Museum in London, and Cabral’s photo won the category for Animals in their Environment in 2017. The NHM started an investigation into the photo after it was contacted in March by anonymous...

Shure makes its superb electrostatic earphones a touch more affordable at $1,999

Shure KSE1200.

A year ago, I reviewed the $2,999 Shure KSE1500 earphones and declared them an outstanding technological feat with a sound that’s basically impossible to obtain anywhere else. Well, there’s now a more attainable version of the same, with Shure announcing the $1,999 KSE1200, which eschew the digital signal processor (DSP) and ship only with an accompanying amplifier. That allows the company to slice a third off the original audiophile earphones’ price while still retaining the claim to best-in-class fame.

The truth is that Shure’s electrostatic earphones win the prize of best in their class by default: no one else is doing anything as ambitious as this. The KSE1500s were an entire personal music listening system — one where you plugged in...
