Senators grill tech companies about Russian interference, but don’t get very far

A bipartisan group of Senators grilled tech companies today about how Russians used their platforms to interfere in the 2016 election, calling on them to better monitor abuse in the future. A subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary committee challenged top lawyers from Facebook, Google, and Twitter on the potential use of shell companies to hide advertiser identities, the malicious use of bot networks, and the limited capabilities of existing ad review policies. But despite the bipartisan appeal of criticizing the tech companies in public, it’s not clear what, if anything, will come of the critiques.

Facebook, Google, and Twitter sent top legal officials to Washington this week for a series of hearings about Russian interference in 2016...

NASA engineers create a parachuting pumpkin for their annual Halloween contest

It’s that time of year again when NASA scientists compete to make the most creative, the most technologically challenging, and the most impressive pumpkin display of them all. This year, pumpkins spun, floated, and sailed like ships in the seventh annual (unofficial) pumpkin carving contest at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The rules of the pumpkin carving contest are simple, says Pete Waydo, deputy section manager of spacecraft mechanical engineering at JPL and a judge of the contest. Contestants can pick up their pumpkins a week before the competition and start assembling their displays, but only on the day of the contest can they actually work on their pumpkins — in just one hour. Other than that, Waydo says, “There are no rules.”

Samsung is teaming up with WeWork for its own version of Apple’s Genius Bar

If you break an iPhone, your next step is simple: you schedule an appointment at a Genius Bar and hope that someone can fix it. If you’ve got a Samsung phone, though, things are a little harder, but Samsung is looking to change that with a new pilot program. The company is teaming up with WeWork to provide “care centers,” as reported by Fast Co Design.

The idea is two-fold: first, you have a central place to come and get help with your Samsung products, and second (this is where WeWork comes in) you’ll have a place to get some work done while you’re waiting for your phone or laptop to get repaired. As Mick McConnell, Samsung’s VP of design, puts it, “Service is a hassle. I know I’m going to have to take time out of my day to do it,” so...

Everything coming to Netflix, Amazon Prime, and HBO Now in November

November is nearly upon us, and when this whole “dress up as scary monsters” business is over, it will be time for a new month of movies and television shows from your streaming service of choice. (That’s assuming you’ve already watched all of Stranger Things season 2. If you haven’t, you should probably just do that right now before the internet ruins every single secret about the show.)

Usually, we try to tease out an overarching theme every month with these roundups, but there really isn’t one this time around. Netflix, as usual, is leaning heavily into original programming. Its new series Alias Grace, based on the Margaret Atwood novel of the same name, is coming on November 3rd, with the second season of Lady Dynamite arriving a...

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is coming to Xbox One on December 12th

Microsoft became the official publisher of the popular survival shooter PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) earlier this year. While the promise has always been a 2017 release on the Xbox, Microsoft is revealing today that PUBG will be available on December 12th, through the Xbox Game Preview program. That does mean this, like the PC version, won’t be a final edition of the game, but in an industry where a lot of games arrive before they’re really finished it shouldn’t matter.

PUBG is a competitive shooter where 100 people parachute into a map and loot cities and towns for weapons, armor, and other in-game items. It’s then a fight to the finish, Hunger Games-style, while the map shrinks around players forcing them into battles. The game...

Best Buy won’t let you buy the iPhone X or iPhone 8 at full price anymore

Best Buy will now only sell the iPhone X and iPhone 8 through monthly carrier payment plans and has stopped offering customers the option of buying Apple’s latest smartphones outright in one lump sum. The move, reported by Bloomberg, comes after the retailer took criticism for charging an extra $100 on top of the already-expensive $999 iPhone X starting price listed by Apple and wireless carriers. The iPhone 8 was marked up in a similar way.

"Although there was clearly demand for the unactivated iPhone X, selling it that way cost more money, causing some confusion with our customers and noise in the media," a spokesperson told Bloomberg. "That’s why we decided a few days ago to only sell the phone the traditional way, through installment...

Apple confirms 'edge stripes' showing up on GPS-equipped Apple Watch Series 3s

Apple has issued an internal memo to Genius Bars and Apple Authorized Service Providers confirming that some Apple Watch Series 3s are experiencing an issue where "edge strips" show up on the display, MacRumors reports. The internal memo instructs repairers to fix the device for free under Apple's standard one-year limited warranty.

MacRumors claims to have viewed the memo, in which Apple says only GPS models are affected, not cellular models. Apparently repairers can verify the issue by having users rub their fingers on the display, so smearing appears. If the edge strips don't show up, Apple's says they should clean the display and then have a user breathe on it to create humidity. The moisture might be what's causing the edge strips,...

Instagram adds right-to-left language support starting with Arabic, Farsi, and Hebrew

Instagram today added support for languages that are written and read from right to left, starting with Arabic, Farsi, and Hebrew. It’s been a long time coming for such a software update, considering Instagram has up until today supported 33 languages, including everything from Tagalog to Romanian to Bahasa Melayu. Instagram says it had to reformat its entire app to support an opposite text flow, according to TechCrunch.

There are still some popular right-to-left languages left out, including Urdu and Azeri, but Instagram is starting with official country languages to mainly help Android users of the MENA (or Middle East and North Africa) region. To that end, and because Android is the operating system of choice for more than 70 percent...

Apple won’t let apps turn the iPad’s camera into a button

Earlier this month, drawing app developer Astro HQ released a video of a really clever new idea for its apps: it turned the iPad’s front camera into a button, letting you tap on the lens to activate things on screen. It was a smart way to free up screen space, but as it turns out, Apple doesn’t agree. Astro said today that its app was rejected from the App Store for violating Apple’s guidelines.

In particular, Apple pointed to a section saying that apps couldn’t “alter or disable the functions of standard switches, such as the Volume Up/Down and Ring/Silent switches, or other native user interface elements or behaviors.” While Astro’s app, Astropad Studio, wasn’t strictly altering a switch, it did make the camera stop acting like a...

Inside Russia’s love-hate relationship with Bitcoin

After years of ambiguous signals, Russian president Vladimir Putin finally clarified Russia’s stance on cryptocurrencies last week with five presidential orders demanding officials set up a legal framework to handle digital currencies. The orders include plans to tax crypto miners, regulate ICOs, sandbox legislation for newly developed blockchain technologies, and an order that outlines the “formation of a single payment space,” likely part of the digital ruble initiative that the Russian Central Bank has been pursuing. It’s a surprising development that could solidify cryptocurrency acceptance within the Russian Federation.

It’s been a big year for cryptocurrencies: Bitcoin and Ethereum have seen exponential growth in value, and ICOs...

The Razer Phone might have 120Hz refresh rate, like the iPad Pro

Razer will likely announce its first smartphone tomorrow, November 1st, but last-minute leaks keep coming. Phandroid spotted that UK phone dealer 3G leaked the phone's specs early, and apparently, the device will feature a display with a relatively unprecedented 120Hz refresh rate. This is the same rate as the iPad Pro 10.5, which people loved, and a new phone from Sharp called the Aquos R Compact, which will be released in December in Japan. A high refresh rate is valuable for gaming and reducing lag, so it makes sense that Razer would prioritize the display.

The spec listing also suggests the phone will include support for Dolby Atmos sound through front-facing stereo speakers and amplifiers certified by THX. Again, this will likely...

Google made hardware to replace your office’s horrible video call system

Google is trying to make video conferencing less awful by designing its own speaker-mic and other hardware that works with Google Calendar. It’s bundled together a touchscreen controller, a speaker-mic, a camera, and an Asus Chromebox that work in sync to let offices coordinate meetings.

The 10.1-inch touchscreen controller lets you join events scheduled on Google Calendar and look up meeting details. You can also pin or mute team members, control the camera, and add people to a call. The controller can be connected to a laptop via an HDMI cable and has a 1280 x 800 display.

Google designed the speaker-mic to reduce echo and background noise. The speaker has a 360-degree pickup with four cardioid mics and a 250-square-foot range. For...

Security researcher exploits bug to access Google’s issue-tracking system

Google has an internal platform called Google Issue Tracker that tracks a list of bugs and unpatched vulnerabilities, but that platform itself had a bug that allowed one security researcher to access anything on the list, reports Motherboard. This would have permitted someone to view all of Google’s requested features and unpatched bugs, potentially allowing hackers to exploit the information. Google has since patched the flaw.

Security researcher Alex Birsan was able to access that information by using a function that allows external researchers to unsubscribe from email lists about particular issues. Once unsubscribed, the system would then send details of the bug in a final response. The system assumed the user had permission in the...

People are getting locked out of innocuous Google Docs for supposedly violating Terms of Service

Google Docs users are reporting various bugs today that result in them getting locked out of their documents. Most of the issues center on a mysterious Terms of Service violation.

The reports largely come from journalists. It's unclear whether the error is targeting media companies and reporters, or if it’s just coincidence because reporters tend to spend a lot of time in the app (and on Twitter). Nevertheless, this bug is concerning, considering it implies that Google is scanning documents for content and something is misfiring on the company's end.

We've reached out to Google for clarification and will update when we hear back.

Super Mario Run’s 200 million downloads didn’t result in “acceptable profit” for Nintendo

Nintendo’s first mobile game, Super Mario Run, was enormously popular — but that doesn’t mean it was a success for the company. During its most recent earnings report, Nintendo revealed that Mario Run has been downloaded 200 million times, 90 percent of which came from outside of Japan. However, Nintendo says that despite these big numbers, the game has “not yet reached an acceptable profit point.” While Nintendo didn’t reveal any specifics with regards to conversion rates, a big sticking point for many with Super Mario Run was its comparatively large price point; it’s free to download, but requires a one-time fee of $9.99 to unlock the whole game.

In contrast, Fire Emblem Heroes — which utilizes a more typical free-to-play structure,...

Microsoft’s Surface Pro with LTE launches in December

Microsoft first unveiled its Surface Pro with LTE earlier this year, promising a release before the end of 2017. As the year draws to an end, Microsoft now says it plans to launch the Surface Pro with LTE support in December. If that timing sounds familiar, it’s because a Microsoft employee accidentally revealed it during an Ignite session last month.

Microsoft’s Surface Pro with LTE Advanced (yes, that’s the full model name) will include an Intel Core i5 processor and a Qualcomm Snapdragon X16 modem. Microsoft is using this LTE chipset, with 20 LTE bands, to ensure that anyone can buy this model of Surface Pro and have LTE work in any country around the world. Microsoft isn’t promising any specific battery life for this LTE model, but...

OnePlus 5T leak shows nearly edge-to-edge screen

The OnePlus 5T is rumored to arrive this fall, following up on the OnePlus 5, which was released this past June. OnePlus hasn’t confirmed anything about the rumored phone yet.

A leaked photo of the OnePlus 5T is circulating online, showing a nearly edge-to-edge screen with slim bezels. The leak is a render of the top half of the OnePlus 5T, tweeted out by Evan Blass of Venture Beat. From the image, the phone appears to have 2.5D curved glass, similar to the iPhone 8.

According to an earlier leak from GizChina, the OnePlus 5T will have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, an Adreno 540 GPU, 8GB of RAM, and a 20MP front and rear camera. The rumored 6-inch screen will reportedly have a 1080 x 2160 resolution. A tweet from OnePlus’s CEO from...

Russia’s election posts reached 126 million people, Facebook will tell Congress

The figures are disclosed in prepared testimony scheduled to be delivered Tuesday by Facebook’s general counsel, Colin Stretch, at a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing. “The foreign interference we saw is reprehensible and outrageous and opened a new battleground for our company, our industry and our society,” the...
