The new GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is Nvidia’s fastest graphics card ever

Nvidia has announced its next monster graphics card: the $699 GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang unveiled the new card on stage at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, where he promised that the GTX 1080 Ti not only offered “35 percent more performance” than its predecessor (the base GTX 1080), but that it was even faster than the current king of cards — the $1,200 Titan X.

The GTX 1080 Ti beats out the regular GTX 1080 in most specifications, with 11 GB of 11 Gbps DDR5X VRAM, compared to its predecessor’s 8 GB. And while the Titan X has more RAM — 12 GB — it runs at slower speeds of 10 Gbps, and falls very slightly behind the new card in terms of bandwidth and compute power. The GTX 1080 Ti also isn’t as much of...

Samsung Galaxy S8 leaks in its full glory

Evan Blass, professional spoiler of well kept smartphone secrets, is back with another hit today, this time revealing the most-anticipated non-iPhone of 2017, Samsung’s Galaxy S8. His new image reveals a handset that agrees wholeheartedly with Samsung’s Mobile World Congress teaser of a device with utterly minimal front bezels. It also features Samsung’s confirmed date for the launch, March 29th, and gives us a good look at what’s presumably going to be the lock screen welcoming new users when the phone is released in April.

Show Notes: Amazon Web Services Appreciation Day

Before every episode of The Vergecast I sit down, read through a bunch of news, and take a bunch of notes. So, every day I’m sitting down and writing some notes on the news as though I’ll be talking about it later. Are you into this? Am I into this? I don’t know. But it’s fun to do! Give me some feedback and we’ll keep mutating this into something good.

The company celebrated the number in a blog post today, along with a couple more statistics: people have made 160 million downloads of Cardboard apps on Google Play, and 30 Cardboard titles have over a million downloads apiece. The shipment numbers also presumably don’t include mobile VR viewers that aren’t official Cardboard headsets, but could still be used with Cardboard apps.

Amazon has brought its hosting services back online after more than four hours of errors that took down sites and services across the web. Hosting services are now “operating normally,” Amazon says, and the errors that had been popping up throughout the day are supposed to have been resolved.

A huge number of companies rely on Amazon’s S3 hosting service for their websites and apps, so when Amazon began experiencing errors earlier today, a much larger part of the internet felt it too.

Trello, Quora, and IFTTT were among the services that went down because of the errors. Nest thermostats and Amazon’s Alexa had problems. And even standbys like isitdownrightnow.com went down.

Why are so many toys vulnerable to hacking?

I keep hoping we’ve reached peak vulnerable gadgets, only to hear about another unsecured device. Toys in particular continue being exposed as privacy and security nightmares that anyone with a slight desire to investigate can uncover. This week in toy privacy nightmares, a company called Spiral Toys was found to have exposed 800,000 user account credentials online, as well as 2 million voice message recordings.

The company’s CloudPets line, which includes internet-connected teddy bears, stored user credentials in a database that wasn’t secured by a password or behind a firewall. Security researchers discovered the MongoDB through Shodan, a search engine for finding vulnerable websites and servers. Their work was independently verified...

Google is going to help carriers build better networks

Google announced this week that it’s partnering with mobile carriers by providing new software platforms to help them build out their cellular networks. It’s a move that makes a lot of sense: after all, Google builds a lot of internet products, so it probably knows a thing or two about building a good network.

India's Bharti Airtel and South Korea's SK Telecom are the first two carriers to sign up to use Google’s new network platform. Google claims that its platform will allow carriers to more easily roll out new features, reduce costs, and “adapt to new services and traffic patterns,” all of which sound like good things for a cellular provider.

It’s unclear whether Google is charging for the service or not, but the company has its own...

Don't expect a new Pixel laptop from Google

The Pixel laptop is no more. At Mobile World Congress, Google’s senior vice president for hardware Rick Osterloh said the company will stop making Chromebooks under the Pixel name, which has recently become more synonymous with the company’s flagship smartphone. According to TechCrunch, Osterloh said Google may still use the Pixel branding for future products that integrates Google’s software with its own hardware, but that is unlikely to come in the form of a laptop computer.

At MWC, Osterloh also admitted that the Pixel smartphones have been experiencing supply and demand issues — which is an understatement, to say the least. Google discontinued its latest version of the Pixel Chromebook last summer after letting it sell out in stores...

YouTube launches its own streaming TV service

At an event in Los Angeles this afternoon, YouTube announced its own streaming TV service. The offering will mix live-streams of broadcast and cable television programming with the wealth of online video found on YouTube. It’s the latest in a surge of over-the-top (OTT) services trying to woo consumers who never bought into traditional cable television.

For $35 a month, subscribers get all four major networks - ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC - and around 30 of the biggest cable channels. Sadly, like many other streaming bundles, it has gaps. YouTube TV, as it’s called, will be missing channels from Viacom.

The last few years have seen a major shift in the advertising industry, with billions of dollars that once flowed into television...

Amazon might have picked the wrong day to celebrate AWSome Day

For generations now, AWSome Day has been one of our most cherished holidays. In a time of turmoil and strife, AWSome Day offers us all a chance to take a step back, relax, and undergo essential training to get our cloud businesses off the ground. For as long as anyone can remember, AWSome Day has passed without incident. And today looked to be just like any other AWSome Day, as you can see from this tweet.

But as the sun rose above Edinburgh this morning, terrible things were afoot on the S3 servers. For reasons that are still unknown, Amazon’s web hosting service collapsed this morning. And when it did, it took...

Amazon’s web servers are down and it’s causing trouble across the internet

Amazon’s web hosting services are among the most widely used out there, which means that when Amazon’s servers goes down, a lot of things go down with it. That appears to be happening today, with Amazon reporting “high error rates” in one region of its S3 web services, and number of services going offline because of it.

Trello, Quora, IFTTT, and Splitwise all appear to be offline, as are websites built with the site-creation service Wix; GroupMe seems to be unable to load assets (The Verge’s own image system, which relies on Amazon, is also down); and Alexa is struggling to stay online, too. Nest’s app was also unable to connect to thermostats and other devices for a period of time.

Isitdownrightnow.com also appears to be down as a...

Porsche Design’s Book One is a beautiful alternative to the Surface Book

Microsoft surprised the world with its Surface Book hinge design, but it’s not the only company capable of creating a unique Windows-powered 2-in-1 laptop. Porsche Design unveiled its Book One at Mobile World Congress this week, and it took me by surprise. Can the Huawei P10's 'Leica-style' portraits beat the iPhone 7 Plus?

At Huawei’s Mobile World Congress event on Sunday, CEO Richard Yu couldn’t stop saying one particular phrase when talking about the P10’s camera: “Leica-style portraits.” Huawei has put portrait modes into its cameras for a while, and started its Leica partnership last year, but with the P10 the company is making a concerted technical and promotional effort to push the feature.

Like the iPhone 7 Plus, the P10 uses a combination of software and a dual-camera array to simulate the shallow depth of field you typically need expensive gear to achieve. I find this technology fascinating, and it’s clear that similar techniques are going to be a big part of photography’s future. But Huawei and Apple’s implementations are actually very...

Emys is like Dora the Explorer except a robot

A company called Flash Robotics designed a robot named Emys that’s supposed to teach kids another language. While plenty of apps, TV shows, and games attempt to ingrain language into kids’ sponge brains through repetition, Emys might be more successful because of its built-in table and unique, expressive face, which relies on three moving disks and two smartwatch displays. It was inspired by emoticons :).

After demoing Emys at The Verge’s office, I don’t think it’ll turn your kids into baby geniuses. But with that said, I do think Flash Robotics approaches language instruction slightly differently than those TV shows and games in an effort to minimize screen time. Emys relies on RFID tags to teach. If a child holds a tag picturing a...

Yooka-Laylee channels the best of gaming’s 3D platforming past

Yooka-Laylee is a game that’s stuck 1998 — and I mean that as a compliment. Playtonic Games, a UK-based developer comprised of former core members of British game maker Rare, set out to create a spiritual successor to the classic Nintendo 64 platformer Banjo-Kazooie. Flush with nearly $2.6 million in Kickstarter cash, the company has spent the last two years creating a polished and refined love letter to the colorful 3D platformers that have been pretty much phased out by time.

Playing a near-final version of Yooka-Laylee last week reminded me of the giddy excitement I felt sitting in front of the N64 two decades ago. Playtonic has created a solid modern rendition on a classic formula, updating and tweaking the platforming systems Rare...

The Verge at work: how to make the most of the Mac menubar

Last week I bought a set of Beats X wireless headphones. They're pretty great, and the Apple-ified system of automatically pairing them to my Mac after I pair them to my iPhone works flawlessly. Less flawless: they seem to do a worse job staying connected to both my iPhone and my computer at the same time than the Bose QC35s do. This means that every time I want to use them on my Mac after using them with my phone, I have to click the Bluetooth menu, click the headphones, and click connect.

Three clicks. In the annals of First World Problems, this is pretty near the top. Even so, I wanted to fix it. And if this were an iPhone or an iPad, I would simply have to accept that that's the way things are. But no, this is a Mac, and on a Mac we...

Ultrasound can make gesture controls on your smartphones actually useful

At trade shows like Mobile World Congress, it’s natural that attention is lavished on the newly unveiled flagship devices soon to hit the market. But, snoop around the booths long enough, and you’ll also find the tech that’s ready to go, but just not yet available to the public. So it is — hopefully — with Elliptic Labs, creators of some of the smoothest smartphone gesture controls I’ve ever seen.

Elliptic Labs’ tech is based on ultrasound, which allows the company to monitor movement in a 360-degree dome surrounding your smartphone. It works like sonar — sending out inaudible frequencies from your phone’s speaker, and listening for their return with the microphone. The company’s algorithms time how long each wave takes to return, and...
