LG showed off a phone called the G7 at Mobile World Congress

We’ve heard rumors that LG won’t call its next G-series phone the G7, and that the company scrapped its internal plans for the phone to start fresh. But today, Israeli publication Ynet published a video of a device that’s clearly marked as the G7 with the codename Neo. It’s unclear whether this is actually the device LG will be releasing or if it’s just to show some work the company’s done on one of its next phones.

Ynet reports this phone has a notch, of course, along with a 6-inch OLED display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. It has an 8-megapixel front-facing camera, two 16-megapixel cameras in the back, and a rear fingerprint sensor. It also incorporates Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor and has 4GB of RAM with 64GB of storage. It has...

Google wants to teach more people AI and machine learning with a free online course

Machine learning and AI are some of the biggest topics in the tech world right now, and Google is looking to make those fields more accessible to more people with its new Learn with Google AI website.

PlayStation Plus is getting rid of free PS3 and Vita games in March 2019

PlayStation Plus might be a little worse of a deal starting next year, with Sony announcing that it’ll no longer be offering free PS3 games and Vita games through the service starting in March 2019 (via Polygon).

Sony first started offering free games to PlayStation Plus subscribers back in 2010, and has since continued to build out the service to offer two PlayStation 3, two Vita, and two PS4 games to subscribers each month. Starting on March 8th, 2019, that will change to just two PS4 games per month, although any games that players have already gotten through the service will continue to be accessible for as long as they continue to subscribe.

Sony hasn’t announced any changes to PlayStation Plus’s price, which will stay at $59.99 for...

This smartwatch can project a tiny dancing man onto your hand

The nice thing about smartwatches is that they put information right on your wrist so it’s easy to check. But what if that information was even more visible? What if that information was right on the back of your hand?

That question, I can only assume, is what led to the creation of Haier’s Asu watch, an enormous smartwatch with a built-in projector. The projector allows the watch to display information on the back of your hand, essentially serving as a second screen.

Haier uses the projection to provide additional information. So when you’re running, the projection will display distance, time, and progress toward fitness goals, while the watch screen will have controls to pause and finish your workout. The projection actually supports...

A video game-playing AI beat Q*bert in a way no one’s ever seen before

A screenshot of the 1980s arcade and Atari classic Q*bert

AI research and video games are a match made in heaven. Researchers get a ready-made virtual environment with predefined goals they can control completely, and the AI agent gets to romp around without doing any damage. Sometimes, though, they do break things.

Case in point is a paper published this week by a trio of machine learning researchers from the University of Freiburg in Germany. They were exploring a particular method of teaching AI agents to navigate video games (in this case, desktop ports of old Atari titles from the 1980s) when they discovered something odd. The software they were testing discovered a bug in the arcade classic Q*bert that allowed it to rack up near infinite points.

As the trio describe in the paper,...

Twitter is rolling out Bookmarks to all users today

Twitter is globally launching its Bookmarks feature today, giving users a new way of saving tweets they like and might want to revisit. Before, this could be done by liking a tweet, but now you can save them without tapping the heart and directly engaging with a tweet. Another difference is that with Bookmarks, only you know you’ve saved something; the other user doesn’t.

To bookmark something, you tap or click the new share icon beneath a tweet. (The new icon is where the DM icon was previously.) Alongside the official debut of Bookmarks, Twitter is using this update to move several sharing options to one place. You can share a tweet via direct message, share it elsewhere outside of Twitter, or bookmark it. Your Bookmarks are...

Huawei’s entire P20 lineup will likely feature iPhone X-like notches

Huawei’s rumored P20 phone lineup is becoming clearer. Today, VentureBeat reporter Evan Blass published an image of the P20 Lite, which is expected to round out the full phone lineup, which includes the P20 and P20 Pro. All the devices will likely feature a notch at the top, similar to the iPhone X, as well as 18:9 displays.

Blass reports that the P20 Lite will be a 5.6-inch phone with a 1080 x 2250 display and a rear fingerprint scanner. It’ll feature an octa-core Kirin 659 chipset, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of internal storage, a 3,520mAh battery, and will run Android 8.0 Oreo.

Huawei has previously suggested that one of its phones would feature a three-camera system, which would probably show up in the P20 Pro, if at all. The regular P20...

YouTube bans neo-Nazi channel after criticism over hate speech rules

After days of external pressure, YouTube has banned the channel of Atomwaffen, a neo-Nazi group tied to multiple killings. Google’s Slack competitor Hangouts Chat is launching for businesses as part of G Suite

Google is releasing Hangouts Chat this week, a service that allows users to message each other privately or in groups, and work collaboratively on projects. Now, it’s open to all users signed up to G Suite, Google’s software for businesses that includes Gmail, Google Docs, and so on.

Hangouts Chat represents a big overhaul of Google’s messaging strategy that signals its entry into the business communication arena. For businesses already paying for G Suite tools, Hangouts Chat could be an attractive alternative to Slack as it will be included for every G Suite subscriber at no extra cost....

The Clone Wars: iPhone X copycats battle for notch supremacy

iPhone X and Asus Zenfone 5

Former Tottenham Hotspur soccer player Ledley King looked slightly sheepish as he pulled down the massive red curtain to reveal a new phone, and not just because it got stuck on a hook. And who could blame him? Behind the curtain was a picture of Tottenham’s star lineup, including current Premier League top goalscorer Harry Kane with a pained expression on his face and an uncannily familiar phone in his hand.

Above Kane's head read the slogan: “Android Oreo Notch Display”.

That’s right: the notch is now a selling point. Kane’s supposed phone, the Leagoo S9 Pro, is just one of a tide of iPhone X clones that have swept through Mobile World Congress this week, often from little-known Chinese manufacturers competing to get products out as...

How a secretive, unknown smartphone app became the center of Turkey’s post-coup crackdown

Hamdullah faithfully served his country in the Turkish Armed Forces for more than two decades before retiring as a specialist sergeant. Needless to say, Hamdullah, who requested we only use his first name, was shocked when he suddenly found himself jailed upon suspicion of being a member of a terrorist organization in April of last year.

The charges were based on an unusual piece of evidence: the apparent presence of the messaging app ByLock on Hamdullah’s phone. In September 2017, Turkish courts ruled that having the app was sufficient proof to link one to a network made up of followers of the controversial Islamic cleric Fethullah Gülen, a Turkish national that has lived in Pennsylvania for nearly two decades. The government insists...

Facebook is expanding its job application functionality to 40 new countries

Job hunters around the world can now use Facebook to search and apply for openings at local businesses. The social network announced today that its job application feature will now be available in more than 40 countries. The feature rolled out to the US and Canada last year.

The company’s also making it easier for businesses to get their listings online by letting them post openings through the Facebook app. Once they’ve posted a job, managers can sift through applicants and directly reach out through Messenger. Job seekers can also subscribe to a company’s listings.

I briefly spoke with Gaurav Dosi, the jobs product manager at Facebook, and asked him about whether people treat their Facebook page like their LinkedIn. As I’m sure...

Apple Watch Series 3 gets skiing and snowboarding workout tracking

Apple is giving third-party apps on its smartwatch new access to winter sport tracking today. Several third-party ski and snowboard tracking Apple Watch apps are releasing updates on the App Store that integrate with the Watch’s fitness tracking features for winter sports enthusiasts.

The support for the new features originally rolled out with the watchOS 4.2 update released in December, which added custom workout APIs focused on tracking winter sports activities, but it seems that Apple is only now letting developers roll out software updates that use them.

Apps that have been updated with the new features include snoww, Slopes, Squaw Alpine, Snocru, and Ski Tracks. Using the new APIs and the Watch 3’s built-in GPS and altimeter, they...

Leaked images supposedly show Fitbit’s next ‘mass appeal’ smartwatch

Wareable has published leaked images that supposedly show Fitbit’s next smartwatch. The device has a sleek design and will reportedly be aimed at female consumers. According to Wareable, it’ll run on Fitbit OS, will be water resistant up to 50 meters, and has the ability to monitor sleep apnea through a SpO2 sensor. However, it won’t have GPS. Fitbit CEO James Park previously mentioned during an investor call that the company plans to launch a smartwatch with “mass appeal,” and this might be it.

Fitbit’s last wearable, the $299 Ionic, was launched to average reviews; The Verge’s own Lauren Goode noted its inelegant hardware and limited smartwatch functionality. The Ionic is also chunky and only available in one size, putting off users...

Apple officially moves its Chinese iCloud operations and encryption keys to China

Today Apple formally transferred its Chinese iCloud operations to a local firm in southern China. It also began hosting its iCloud encryption keys in China, instead of the US, for the first time. The move has been expected since last year when Apple announced its partnership with Guizhou-Cloud Big Data (GCBD), a Chinese firm supervised by a board ran by government-owned businesses, with close ties to the government and Chinese Communist Party.

Apple users with iCloud accounts registered in China will now have their data hosted by the GCBD center. Users who don’t want their data handed over can choose to delete their Chinese iCloud accounts. Apple has told Reuters that it won’t transfer accounts over to the new data center unless users...

Take a ride in one of Waymo’s fully driverless minivans with this 360-degree video

Waymo continues to lay the groundwork for its commercial robot taxi service in Phoenix, releasing a video today with a 360-degree look inside of one of the company’s fully driverless minivans. It’s part of the Google spinoff’s public education campaign to raise awareness around a technology that remains inaccessible — and even a little scary — to most people.

The Arizona Department of Transportation recently greenlit Waymo’s application to operate as a transportation network in the state, a crucial step as it readies its ride-hailing service that will compete directly with Uber. But before it can launch, it needs to assure a wary public that self-driving cars can safely navigate through complex urban and suburban environments. And that...

These smart glasses feel like they were designed by people who’ve never worn glasses

Ersun Kartal wearing mockups of Tooz’s next smart glasses

Smart glasses are ever so slowly returning to public view after the embarrassing flop that was Google Glass. And the latest pair of glasses are meant to get ready for a possible boom: that’s because they aren’t really one pair of glasses, but a hardware platform ready to be customized with any number of sensors and input methods, then marketed for sports use, for industrial applications, or even for daily wear.

The glasses come from a new company called Tooz, which is a joint venture between Zeiss and Deutsche Telekom, the parent company of T-Mobile. Though Deutsche Telekom is involved and ready to shout “5G!” at a moment’s notice (the glasses can support 5G connections, which don’t really exist), the project seems to have been born...

A phone drove a Porsche, and I rode along

Huawei has spent a lot of time talking up the supposed AI capabilities of its latest in-house processor design, the Kirin 970. Found inside the company’s newest Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro smartphones, as well as the Honor View 10, the Kirin 970 has a dedicated “neural processing unit” or NPU that’s designed specifically for AI-related tasks.

So far, however, there haven’t been that many use cases for the NPU, despite Huawei’s efforts to promote open AI development on its platform. Out of the box, you’ll only really notice the NPU at work in things like the camera app, which automatically detects subjects in the scene based on image recognition and adjusts settings accordingly. So this week at Mobile World Congress, Huawei wanted to put the...

Bragi wants to sell AI more than headphones

If you know Bragi, it’s because you know the Dash earbuds. The company launched on Kickstarter three years ago with one of the most exciting wireless earbuds to date. It’s iterated on them for the past two years, and it now makes one of the better pairs on the market. But Bragi CEO Nikolaj Hviid says the company is only interested in headphones to a point — its real goal is to sell AI.

To that end, Bragi is announcing a machine learning platform this week called NanoAI. Other companies will be able to license NanoAI, train the system on relevant data, and use it to add intelligent features to their products. One example Hviid gave is a power drill: its creator could train NanoAI on a set of pressure or vibration data that lets the...

MIT’s robot carpenters will saw wood for you, but you have to make the furniture yourself

Researchers from MIT have created a new system of robot-assisted carpentry that they say could make the creation of custom furniture and fittings safer, easier, and cheaper.

The system is made up of two parts: design software and semi-autonomous robots. Users select a template from the software (like a chair, table, or shed) and then adjust it to their liking, tweaking the size and shape. This order is then turned into instructions for the robots, which autonomously pick up and saw the necessary materials to the correct size. And it’s then up to the user to put the finished product together.

At the moment, the whole process is pretty basic, and involves a lot of human oversight and instruction. There are only four design templates to...

China censors social media responses to proposal to abolish presidential terms

Negative social media reactions in China toward the government’s interest in abolishing presidential term limits have sparked a crackdown on memes since Sunday evening. China’s constitution currently restricts the president and vice-president to 10 years of leadership, meaning that President Xi Jinping would have been out of power by 2023.

The Party’s Central Committee proposed removing a phrase in the constitution that stated the two leaders would “serve no more than two consecutive terms,” according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency. Authorities will vote on the proposal in March.

Many took to social media platforms like WeChat and Weibo with Winnie the Pooh memes, as the animated bear resembles President Xi Jinping to some degree....

BlackBerry will remove paid apps from the BlackBerry World app store on April 1st

BlackBerry Limited, the company that manages BlackBerry brand licensing and software, today began informing some app developers that it will forcibly remove paid software from the BlackBerry World app store on April 1st. BlackBerry says the marketplace will become a “free-only storefront,” and that “all purchasing mechanisms will be disabled.”

Apps can still be monetized, the company says, but payment backends must be supported by the developer and built into the app itself. Refunds for paid content will be supported until April 30th, 2018, the note confirms, and customers will retain access to paid content even after it is removed. If a developer chooses not to transition an app from paid to free, the company will remove it by March...
