Xiaomi's bezel-free Mi Mix 2 is coming on September 11th

With its unprecedented screen-to-body ratio, Xiaomi's Mi Mix was the first harbinger of 2017's least escapable phone trend. A little under a year later, the sequel is nearly here — Xiaomi has confirmed on Weibo that the Mi Mix 2 is set to be announced at an event on September 11th.

There isn't much in the way of credible information on the phone out there. Designer Phillipe Starck posted a “conceptual product design” video suggesting even slimmer bezels earlier this month, however, while the company's managing director for India has also signaled his excitement with a teaser image on Twitter.

Twitch announces new Extensions program to let streamers customize their pages

Twitch announced a major update to its channel pages today in the form of a new extensions program that will let streamers customize their channels with third-party developer extensions.

There will be over 20 extensions available at launch, including more generic ones like polls or a leaderboard for top fans, to game-specific ones that can display things like a streamer’s current Destiny loadout or Overwatch statistics. Streamers will be able to directly integrate these extensions into live video, too. While many streamers have already been using tools like this for a while, the fact that Twitch is building extensions directly into the platform should make it easier for more people to take advantage of the tools.

I came to IFA in Berlin fully prepared to bury Sony’s mobile division and its perpetually inadequate efforts to compete in a congested, hypercompetitive smartphone market. Sennheiser’s wireless earbuds slim down in a big way with the HD1 Free

Sennheiser is announcing three new headphones today: two brand new models of wireless earbuds, and a redesigned version of what the company claims are the “finest pair of ear canal phones on the market.”

At the top of the list is the Momentum HD1 Free (seen above), a new entry in Sennheiser’s line of fashionable but good-sounding headphones. It’s a pair of neckbuds, but they aren’t attached by one of those huge plastic neck straps — there’s just a cord in between the earbuds, with small plastic pieces on either side, one of which contains playback controls and a mic.

Nest promises ‘big announcement’ at September 20th event

Nest just sent out invites for a September 20th press conference at which the company says it will make a “big announcement.” Having just unveiled a new, more affordable smart thermostat, Nest clearly has some other products lined up for the fall. The invite makes reference to a couch and popcorn, suggesting that Nest might be preparing a new gadget meant for the living room, but offers no other hints as to what might be coming late next month.

Aside from the redesigned thermostat, Nest has also recently launched home security cameras including the Cam IQ. The new Nest Thermostat E features a simpler, more conventional design than the company’s previous thermostats and will be available beginning tomorrow for $169.

After slow iterating the Miix tablet from its Core M roots, the new Miix 520 will include Intel’s 8th generation quad-core i7 processor. It’s an addition that pushes its CPU performance past Microsoft’s new Surface Pro, alongside 8GB of RAM, 256GB of SSD storage, and a 12.2-inch 1920 x 1200 display. Lenovo also offers a USB-C port, the company’s own active pen support, and an optional 3D camera for capturing images.

After a short hiatus, Motorola is bringing back the venerable Moto X. The new, fourth-generation Moto X, or Moto X4, is no longer the company’s flagship phone (that honor is reserved for the Moto Z2 lineup), but fills out the midrange in Motorola’s lineup. Highlight features of the Moto X4 include a new dual-camera setup and support for hands-free control of Amazon’s Alexa voice assistant. After requiring customers who ordered the Essential phone to provide their driver’s license information over email to verify their shipping address, CEO Andy Rubin today apologized for the incident in a blog post, calling it “humiliating” and that he is “personally responsible for this error.”

Bringing back old tech is one thing, but what about reinventing it altogether? One Redditor named Abhishek Singh did just this after pondering if it would be possible to hold a GIF in your hand. The result: a DIY Polaroid camera that “prints” GIFs.

Inspired by the Polaroid OneStep camera (the SX-70, specifically), Singh’s version looks almost exactly the same, but instead of printing to film, it ejects a Polaroid-sized LCD that plays back the just-recorded GIF. Audio-Technica has revealed both a new wireless Bluetooth over-ear headphone model as well as a series of wireless Bluetooth in-ear headphones. Unlike the brand’s other recent reveal — the upmarket ATH-ADX5000 (which comes with its own suitcase!) — all these newly released models are affordably priced, but still have quality-conscious listeners in mind.

The ATH-AR5BT over-ear model follows the ATH-AR3BT, released earlier this year. Many specs are shared between the two wireless headphones, like a 30 hour battery life and support for Bluetooth aptX, AAC, and SBC codecs. But, there are some upgrades. The VR dating show makes me want to never date again

You know those gimmick-based dating shows about people going on dates naked, or in the dark, or with some other twist? Someone is doing this for virtual reality now, and while that already may not sound great, I promise that it is worse than it sounds. It’s not that Virtually Dating is dumb about VR, or that it sensationalizes it. It’s just a dating show that’s so boring it tarnishes the concept of dating itself.
