LG might be working on a mini G6

LG released its newest flagship, the G6, in April this year. Now, it seems the company might be considering, or at least considered at one point, releasing a mini version of that device. TechnoBuffalo reports that its team viewed an internal document that depicts a 5.4-inch device with an 18:9 aspect ratio. That’s the same unique ratio LG introduced with the G6.

The document didn’t mention any specs, and it’s dated to last year. This could mean LG canceled its plans to manufacture this device, although TechnoBuffalo thinks the phone could still happen. In actuality, a 5.4-inch device isn’t much smaller than the G6’s current 5.7-inch display. I wouldn’t expect LG to release a smaller G6, but hey, you never know.

Google is finally rolling out a Bluetooth update for Home

Google announced that it would be updating its Google Home virtual assistant / speaker with Bluetooth audio support at I/O earlier this year, and now that update has begun to roll out to Home owners, as noted by Android Police.

Once you’ve updated your Home, you’ll be able to use it as a Bluetooth speaker — something that Amazon’s Echo has already been capable of for a while, although Google’s own home speaker has supported the company’s Chromecast Audio standard since launch. The new addition of Bluetooth, however, should greatly widen the number of compatible devices that will work with Home for music streaming, as well as allow it to be used as a speaker even without Wi-Fi.

Casino ATMs are using facial recognition to spot money launderers in Macau

Casino destination Macau is requiring facial recognition and identification card checks for withdrawals made by Chinese UnionPay cardholders at all ATMs, as reported by Bloomberg. Customers who make a withdrawal from the updated cash machines will be asked to stare into a camera for six seconds so the facial-recognition software can verify them against their identity card.

The move is a three-fold effort to reinforce Macau’s existing anti-money laundering rules, increase banking security, and enable China to try and dampen the outflows pushing down the value of its currency (which, last year, topped $816 billion). Casinos are a classic way to launder money, as individuals can withdraw significant amounts for chips, gamble very little,...

US denies visas to Afghanistan’s all-girl robotics team

Six teenage girls from Afghanistan planned to come to the US to compete in the First Global Challenge robotics competition this month, but those plans were canceled after they were denied visas to enter the country. Forbes reports that the girls traveled 500 miles to Kabul for their visa interviews, and that their robot’s supplies were held in customs for months.

This kit, which the competition organizers issued to every participating team, included different components, like brackets, extrusions, fastening hardware, hardware adaptors, bearings, wheels of different sizes, gears, pulleys, motors, servos, and sprockets. The State Department feared ISIS might try to use these parts on the battlefield, which is why they delayed sending them...

Sprint is getting sued for sabotaging RadioShack’s comeback

RadioShack is going down swinging. With nearly all of its stores now out of business, the retailer’s creditors have sued Sprint and are accusing the wireless carrier of backstabbing RadioShack and destroying any hope of a great American comeback story. The creditors are seeking $500 million in damages, according to Reuters, and are alleging that Sprint used a co-branding partnership formed between the two companies in 2015 to its own selfish benefit — and to RadioShack’s eventual doom.

That was back when RadioShack had freshly emerged from bankruptcy and was oddly hopeful that adding Sprint (by then the fourth largest US carrier) to its stores could somehow help turn things around and hold off the hand of fate. In this case, that’s the...

Palmer Luckey backs VR project to make exclusive Oculus games run on the HTC Vive

Oculus founder Palmer Luckey confirmed yesterday that he donated money to a virtual reality project focused on letting the HTC Vive headset play games exclusive to the Oculus Rift. The project, called CrossVR, is currently live on crowdfunding site Patreon with a note thanking Luckey for his contribution.

Although the note now confirms the $2,000 pledge (it apparently did not originally contain the exact figure), Waypoint confirmed the donation with Luckey himself. There is a slight discrepancy in the numbers: the project has only $2,005 per month from 64 backers. That suggests Luckey’s donation was a one-time thing, perhaps occurring outside Patreon.

Regardless, the donation is a strange move for a number of reasons. Luckey is no...

This augmented reality concept is like a real-life video game tutorial for your Airbnb rental

We’ve seen some cool uses for Apple’s ARKit and other phone-based augmented reality, but this concept design is one of my personal favorites: an AR overlay for settling guests into an Airbnb rental. It’s like a real-life version of the tutorial interface in a video game, except instead of telling you that you can open grates to sneak into locked rooms, it shows you how to use the thermostat or find a first-aid kit. (It’s also a clever replacement for taping notes to the wall, which is probably more accurate, but less fun to imagine.)

The concept was made by interface designer Isil Uzum, who imagines combining the augmented reality capabilities of ARKit or Google’s Project Tango with a smartphone’s location-sensing features. Airbnb hosts...

Toyota built a robot to help a paralyzed Army vet around the house

Toyota recently completed its first in-home trial of its new Human Support Robot. The Japanese auto giant built the HSR to help people with disabilities perform everyday tasks around the home, like open doors and fetch water bottles. In this case, the robot was delivered to the home of a US Army vet who is paraplegic, and, as you can imagine, the results were quite heartwarming.

The HSR, with its articulated torso and arm and video calling functionality, has mainly been in use in hospitals in Japan, helping with that country’s rapidly aging population. Demonstrations showed people operating the HSR remotely via a touchscreen tablet to open curtains and deliver food and water to bed-ridden family members. But this is the first time the...

Unity is the little game engine that could revolutionize animated movies

This week, I attended the Unite Europe conference in Amsterdam, where more than 1,400 current and aspiring game developers gathered to see the latest tools and innovations from Unity, the company responsible for one of the most popular and widely used game engines. But my big takeaway from the event was less about gaming than about moviemaking: the new Cinemachine component that's coming to Unity's 2017.1 release feels a little bit revolutionary. It grants amazing directorial and cinematography powers to even neophyte users like me, and it goes to the heart of Unity's stated mission of democratizing development. It's like the stuff Epic Games talked about with the Unreal Engine back in 2015 made real today.

The web has made the pursuit...

Microsoft’s canceled Surface Mini tablet emerges in leaked images

Microsoft was planning to introduce a Surface Mini tablet alongside its Surface Pro 3 at an event in May 2014. While the Surface Pro 3 was announced to much surprise, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and former Nokia CEO Stephen Elop canceled the Surface Mini project just weeks before. We’ve heard about the Surface Mini many times over the past few years, but Windows Central has now obtained images of the device.

The Surface Mini was an 8-inch device with a 1440 x 1080 display, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 1GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. Microsoft even included its typical kickstand on the Surface Mini, alongside what appears to be a rubber-style exterior that would have shipped in a variety of colors. As the Surface Mini was powered...

F.lashes is the crazy piece of wearable tech no-one asked for, but everyone wants

These LED eyelashes are future fashion

Sometimes you see a product and you’re like “wow, that’s so futuristic.” Then you remember you’re living in 2017, 20 years after the date that a sentient AI wiped out most of humanity in the original Terminator movie, and you think: “Huh, maybe we’re living in the future already.” So it is with these amazing LED eyelashes.

They’re called f.lashes, and they’re the creation of designer Tien Pham, who first showed them off at Maker Faire earlier this year. Encouraged by the reaction he received, Pham has now launched a Kickstarter to make his wearable electronics into a commercial product, and has already attracted more than double his $40,000 target.

Germany passes controversial law to fine Facebook over hate speech

German lawmakers have passed a controversial law under which Facebook, Twitter, and other social media companies could face fines of up to €50 million ($57 million) for failing to remove hate speech. The Network Enforcement Act, commonly referred to as the “Facebook law,” was passed by the Bundestag, Germany’s parliamentary body, on Friday. It will go into effect in October.

Under the law, social media companies would face steep fines for failing to remove “obviously illegal” content — including hate speech, defamation, and incitements to violence — within 24 hours. They would face an initial fine of €5 million, which could rise to €50 million. Web companies would have up to one week to decide on cases that are less clear cut.

Ticket reseller Twickets’ US launch may cut down on ridiculous price gouging

Twickets, a popular England-based fan-to-fan ticket exchange platform, is coming to the US this fall. The platform allows fans to resell unwanted tickets, with prices capped at face value (any booking fees incurred with the original purchase can be included at the seller’s discretion). Twickets then collects a 10 percent transaction fee from the buyer for each sale.

Other popular ticket resale sites, like Ticketmaster and StubHub, allow sellers to set their own price, often resulting in steep markups for high-profile events. When it debuts this fall, Twickets will be the first secondary market ticket platform to require face value sale in the US.

If a fan wants to sell a ticket, Twickets will first check to make sure the ticket is...

Zillow ends its dumb legal crusade against McMansion Hell blogger

When Zillow sent Kate Wagner, the 23-year-old behind the popular blog McMansion Hell, a cease and desist letter this week, the real estate listing company gave her until the end of today to delete photos obtained from Zillow from her website. It’s nearing the deadline and Wagner’s blog is back up, all photos remained, and Zillow has agreed to instead back away from a potential lawsuit.

Here’s the TL;DR of what happened: on Monday, Zillow sent a letter to Wagner claiming her use of Zillow photos to illustrate bad architecture was in violation of copyright laws and did not apply under fair use. We contacted Zillow and the company admitted it technically doesn’t “own the photos” it claims to have copyright over. Just about every law expert...
