BlackBerry-branded wearables and appliances might soon be a thing

BlackBerry announced today that the number of BlackBerry-branded gadgets might soon expand. Although the company doesn’t release much of its own hardware anymore, its name still appears on new smartphones, and now, its licensing practice will apply outside of mobile devices. This could mean the eventual release of branded tablets, wearables, medical devices, appliances, and point-of-sale terminals, all of which will have a touch of BlackBerry DNA. A spokeswoman confirmed to The Verge that every product will feature tech or code from BlackBerry, likely in the form of its security-minded version of Android or enterprise services. In fact, it’s calling this strategy an expansion of the “Enterprise of Things,” which might be the only thing...

The next generation of RAM will double current speeds

DDR5, the next generation of RAM, will double the speeds of current DDR4 RAM when it’s released, according to JEDEC, the organization in charge of computer memory standards, as first noted by Ars Technica.

JEDEC announced it will be finalizing the DDR5 standard sometime in 2018, and says DDR5 will “double the bandwidth and density over DDR4,” and come with greater power efficiency. Despite the fact that the standard will become official next year, DDR5 likely won’t be ready for manufacturers before 2020.

DDR4, the current standard, was finalized in 2012, but didn’t hit shelves in numbers until 2015, as processors and SoCs had to be updated to support it. Hopefully this time around it won’t take as long, and we can get our hands on DDR5...

This Google April Fools’ video isn’t my fault

Google’s annual offering of April Fools’ Day jokes has begun, and the latest is the somewhat clever idea of “Google Gnome,” a Google Home customized for the outdoors that is a little more existentially dour than your average smart assistant.

I say “somewhat clever” because “Google Gnome” is primarily just a bad pun. In fact, it’s a bad pun I made just over two weeks ago on Twitter as part of my ongoing series “Let’s see how many people I can convince to unfollow me.”

Which is worse: the possibility that my tweet inspired this video or the possibility that we both...

Twitter wants you to stop saying ‘Twitter eggs’

Twitter has changed the default profile picture for new accounts from an egg on one of seven different background colors to what they described to Fast Company as a “gumdrop-headed human.” They claim the human is genderless, and that is technically true, but society insists that the default gender is male and for my purposes right now in this blog (and at no other time) — so do I.

Twitter product designer Jeremy Reiss told Fast Company that the goal of the design was to reflect a collection of words. Here it is: “generic, universal, serious, inclusive, unbranded, and temporary... an empty state, essentially.” Yes, these are also words you could use to describe the 2014 film Boyhood.

The new Twitter default profile pic, which was...

Snapchat Stories are now searchable by content

Snapchat Stories are now searchable. The company announced today that users can use the search bar at the top of the app’s main page to find whatever they want in a story. That means you can type “puppy,” and stories featuring puppies will be available to watch, or if you want to watch a Chicago Cubs game, you could type that, too, and story footage from the game will come up. The stories just have to be added to Snapchat’s Our Story group montage to be searchable.

Snapchat released a video that might give you a better idea of how it works:

Snapchat says it relies on machine learning to categorize stories. It’s specifically analyzing caption text, time, and visual elements. We’re guessing this new feature relies on technology from Vurb,...

Apple may bring True Tone displays to the next iPhones

Apple’s next iPhones may feature True Tone displays, according to a note from Barclays, as reported by MacRumors. Currently, Apple’s True Tone display is only available on the 9.7-inch iPad Pro.

True Tone displays can alter the appearance of the screen based on the lighting conditions. So when you’re in a room with yellow bulbs or outside in sunlight, your display will look different — and be easier on the eyes.

True Tone is similar to Night Shift in some ways, but Night Shift is solely designed to limit the amount of blue light you take in during evening hours, not as a 24-hour solution.

Barclays says True Tone will be available on all three of Apple’s iPhones, which it’s referring to as the iPhone 7S, iPhone 7S Plus, and iPhone 8....

Google Maps morphs into Ms. Pac-Man for April Fools’ Day

Looks like Ms. Pac-Man has paid a visit to the Google Maps app. Every year on April Fools’ Day, Google puts out a bunch of prank videos and Easter eggs, and it looks like the team is revisiting an old idea for 2017.

To find Ms. Pac-Man, open up your Google Maps app and click on the pink button on the right. Unlike the Pac-Man integration from 2015’s prank, it doesn’t turn your current location into the game level. Instead, you’re taken to a random spot in the world and get five lives to outrun the ghosts.

If you prefer to choose your own location in Google Maps to turn into a Ms. Pac-Man game, the web version does support pick-your-own levels. I personally wish Google did something more original than rehash an idea from a few years back,...

The Galaxy S8’s facial scanner can, unsurprisingly, be tricked with a photo

Just days after Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S8’s new facial-scanning feature, someone has already successfully spoofed it. Bloggers at Marcianophone secured a S8 with their face and then tricked the phone with a selfie that was saved on another device. The S8 eventually unlocked, though it took a few seconds. Either way, you might not want to use face scanning as your primary form of phone security. Samsung has already noted that facial scanning isn’t the most secure form of authentication. Using your fingerprint, iris, or a PIN is preferable. With that in mind, it’s possible that Samsung is still working on the feature. The phones at its New York City event weren’t final products, so the company could theoretically tighten up security...

Razer Blade review: the Goldilocks of gaming laptops

The Razer Blade is a laptop defined by compromises.

Consider Razer’s slim gaming laptop range, where the 14-inch Blade sits square in the middle of the line. It’s bracketed by the smaller 12.5-inch Stealth below it, which relies on integrated Intel graphics instead of a dedicated graphics card, and the massive 17.3-inch Blade Pro, which theoretically offers even more power at a larger size But like many of Razer’s decisions around the Blade, its middle-of-the-road stance tends to make it just right for most people. Carrying the $1,899.99 Blade around isn’t nearly as onerous as lugging around the Pro, but it’s still a big enough laptop to fit in a full graphics card to play almost any recent game.

Apple’s latest iOS update patches 911 DDoS attack exploit

Back in October, an 18-year-old coder published a simple Javascript exploit that caused iPhones to repeatedly dial 911 after a link was tapped, resulting in emergency call centers getting flooded with thousands of bogus calls as people online shared the URL. The The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple’s 10.3 update to iOS this week finally patches that exploit, which was based around an iOS feature where taping on numbers in certain situations would immediately cause the phone to dial them. While the coder was quickly caught and charged with multiple accounts of computer tampering, the exploit had gone unaddressed by Apple until now.

The update apparently solves that problem by now requiring users to confirm though a prompt that...
