Google will offer app developers the same larger cut of subscriptions as Apple — but sooner

On Wednesday, Apple detailed major shake-ups coming to its powerful app store. Those include a new revenue sharing model that would give developers more money when users subscribe to a service via their apps — instead of keeping 70 percent of all revenue generated from subscriptions, publishers will be able to keep 85 percent of revenue, once a subscriber has been paying for a year.

Now Google plans to up the ante at its app store: It will also move from a 70/30 split to 85/15 for subscriptions — but instead of requiring developers to hook a subscriber for 12 months before offering the better split, it will make it available right away.

Pebble is launching a Happiness app and sharing its fitness algorithms

Pebble made health tracking a priority with the launch of its Kickstarter for the Pebble Core, Pebble 2, and Time 2. Yesterday, it updated its Health app to make it more accurate, and today, the company is releasing two of its fitness algorithms to the public along with a mood-tracking app. One algorithm helps detect motion and the second counts steps. You can read all the technical details in this Medium post. Nathaniel Stockham, a Stanford PhD student and Pebble collaborator, says he made the algorithms available to "encourage the use of a standard set of measures." Other fitness wearable companies, like Fitbit, haven't released their algorithms.

Pebble's work with Stanford goes deeper than its algorithms. The company's also...

Google's TensorFlow is now available for iOS

On Monday, Google released a new version of TensorFlow that supports iOS for the first time. TensorFlow is Google's machine learning software, which the company open-sourced last November and used to power AlphaGo. Engineers at Google have been actively working on a version of TensorFlow at least since then, CNET points out. The new release now lets iOS developer to build neural network features directly into apps, like the ability to parse sentence structure and or recognize people and objects in photos.

Google used TensorFlow to build its Magenta project, which aims to advance machine generated art, and recently released a 90-second piano melody created solely by a neural network. This gives an idea of the sorts of things the software...
